“Be the Unbeatable Squirrel Girl”

The tagline says it all: "You Choose the Story, When You're the Unbeatable Squirrel Girl" — and this 2016 issue from Ryan North and Erica Henderson leans gleefully into a choose-your-own-adventure format that suits the series' playful spirit perfectly. Erica Henderson's cover art presents two young figures — one in an orange jacket, one carrying a lantern — dwarfed by an enormous, grinning golden-masked villain looming over them against a honeycomb-patterned arch, the whole composition evoking vintage adventure novels in the best possible way. It's a genuinely inventive issue that puts the reader in the driver's seat, with Rico Renzi's warm, vivid colors making the whole thing feel like a storybook you'll want to pick up immediately.
