"Hawk Knife—Treason Rides the Warpath" follows the titular character as he returns to his village to find that Crazy Elk has allied with hired guns, including the treacherous Mark Smith, to seize control and drive a wedge between the tribe and Hawk Knife through deceit and murder. "Red Wolf—Renegades of Deadfall Canyon" features Red Wolf discovering a mine camp and becoming embroiled in a conflict involving a dangerous horse named Billy and a criminal gang. Additional stories include "Cheyenne Joe—Red Scalp Magic," "Prairie Kate," and "Indians on the Warpath."
During the troubled Treaty days of 1867, the young Sioux brave Hawk Knife is wrongly suspected of disloyalty by Chief Buffalo Horn, imprisoned on suspicion of treason—but when soldiers suddenly attack the camp, Hawk Knife breaks free to defend his people and uncover the real conspirator behind the violence. As he races to protect a crucial treaty messenger from Crazy Elk's deadly ambush, Hawk Knife must expose the treachery that threatens to destroy both the peace and his own honor among the tribe.
Cheyenne Joe, a cavalry scout from Fort Bison, rescues a pioneer woman named Terry and her Uncle Dan from a raid by Chief Yellow Tooth's warriors along the Oregon Trail. When Yellow Tooth's band pursues them again, Terry gives Cheyenne Joe a wig made from her own red hair—a clever ruse that plays on the raiders' superstitious fear of a legendary red-haired scout from Fort Laramie, turning the tide of the battle.
A single-page exploration of how Native American tribes built their horse herds from wild stock and the Spanish origins of those animals, tracing how warriors developed deep bonds with their war-horses and valued them above nearly all other possessions. The account reveals the cultural significance of these mounts, reserved for the most important occasions—battle, the buffalo hunt, and ceremonial gatherings—and the reluctance warriors showed in ever parting with them.
Red Wolf tracks a trio of ruthless prospectors—Kauffin, Schultz, and Mort—across the treacherous slopes of Rain God Mountain after they raid an Apache camp and kill his brothers Dark Moon and Tree-on-Hill. When the renegades force him to lead them to the legendary Lost Spaniard Mine, Red Wolf must navigate both the deadly terrain and the criminals' greed to survive this perilous hunt through Deadfall Canyon. Every step brings him closer to a reckoning with enemies who'll stop at nothing to claim the gold—and silence anyone who knows its location.
