“The Secret of the Gold Hills”

This Spring 1946 issue from Quality Comics promises five action-packed Spirit stories, and Lou Fine's cover delivers an immediate sense of tension — the blue-suited, masked Spirit looms large against a bold yellow circle while a smaller figure in a red coat and cap recoils in apparent alarm. Fine's clean, confident linework gives both figures a wonderful sense of movement, capturing the masked hero mid-stride with real dramatic weight. At just 10 cents, this was a terrific package of pulpy adventure headlined by the tagline "Flirts With Death!" — which sets expectations perfectly.
