Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man #32 marks a genuine turning point in Peter Parker's civilian continuity: it is the issue in which he begins graduate studies at Empire State University, a status-quo shift that gave writer Bill Mantlo a fresh sandbox of supporting characters to develop independently of the flagship Amazing Spider-Man title. The issue was produced during Bill Mantlo's long, largely uninterrupted tenure as the series' writer, a run that began with issue #9 and shaped the book's personality more than any other single creator. Mantlo scripted over penciler Jim Mooney, with Frank Springer on inks and Al Milgrom editing — a journeyman production team that Marvel veteran Tom Brevoort later characterized as capable and methodical, reflecting the diagrammatic page style then favored by incoming editor-in-chief Jim Shooter. The series had been conceived as a book that would coordinate Peter Parker's life across three simultaneous Spider-Man titles, and this issue's pivot to graduate school was one of the editorial arrangements designed to give Spectacular its own distinct civilian beat separate from Amazing Spider-Man.
