Jimmy Gray overhears gunshots as he sits in his compartment aboard a train. A man is dead, and a brooch found near the body is the only clue, the same brooch that was left in Gray's compartment by a mysterious woman. Later, Gray, as the Shadow, encounters a masked woman named Stella wearing the same brooch, and together they attend a party. At midnight the lights go down and the guests unmask, but when they come back on the hostess is shocked to learn her diamond necklace is gone, stolen. Gray tracks down the brooch's manufacturer, and learns that Stella belongs to a gang of jewel thieves...
