About this Collection

This standalone graphic novel collects the complete story of 'The Search,' originally serialized in 2009. Published by Farrar, Straus, and Giroux, it follows a narrative centered on themes of discovery and personal journey, though specific plot details and creators are not provided in the given data.

In this poignant 2009 issue, Esther, guided by her family and Helena, retraces the harrowing path of her past, seeking answers about the massacre that claimed her parents and other loved ones. With the help of Barend, a former ally from her hiding days, and a journey to Israel, she finally meets Bob—a survivor of Auschwitz who shares the long-buried truth of her parents' fate. Written by Eric Heuvel and Ruud van der Rol, and illustrated by Heuvel with inks and colors by J & M Colorstudio, the story culminates in a quiet, powerful moment when Esther, through a rescued photo album, finally brings her family’s memory to life for her grandson. The cover, also by Eric Heuvel, captures the emotional weight of her journey.

With the help of her family and Helena, Esther explores her own years of escaping Nazi capture, and seeks specific information on the massacre of her family. She reconnects with Barend, whose family helped her hide, and travels to Israel to find Bob, a former neighbor. Bob, who survived Auschwitz, is finally able to give her the story of her parents' (and his parents') deaths. When Esther says that she can scarcely remember her family's faces, Helena recalls that after the parents were captured, she rescued their photo album; finally Esther can show her grandson his family.
