“The Sacrifice”

The fourth issue of DC's 1987 series finds the Question standing alone in a sea of flames, his blank, featureless face bearing dark smudged markings as fire swirls dramatically around him — an image that perfectly captures the existential intensity this series was built on. The cover by Denys Cowan and Bill Sienkiewicz crackles with raw, painterly energy, the bold reds and yellows giving the faceless hero an almost hellish, elemental presence. With Dennis O'Neil writing and a story titled "The Sacrifice," this is mature, thoughtful superhero comics at its most atmospheric.
