“Santa Prisca”

The Question heads somewhere decidedly darker than a tourist brochure in this 1987 issue, as the cover — penciled by Denys Cowan and inked by Bill Sienkiewicz — layers a cascade of cheerful "Welcome to Santa Prisca" postcards splattered with vivid crimson across a tumbling, disoriented figure in blue. The collision of sunny vacation imagery and violence gives the composition an unsettling, almost sardonic energy that suits this mature-readers series perfectly. With Dennis O'Neil writing and Cowan also handling interior art, issue #10 makes a compelling case that paradise can wear a very sinister mask.
