The Phantom #15
In "The River Pirates," the real Phantom returns to the Wambezi jungle to find chaos in his absence—someone wearing his iconic costume has just won the annual tournament by defeating the reigning champion, a feat that's supposed to crown a new jungle ruler. Written by Bill Harris and illustrated by Bill Lignante, with inks by Lignante and lettering by Ray Holloway, this 1965 Western Comics issue unfolds with a mix of mistaken identity and high-stakes tradition. The cover by George Wilson captures the moment of tension as the impostor stands in the spotlight, unaware of the consequences.
In "The River Pirates," the Phantom teams up with a native guide to confront a gang of ruthless river pirates who’ve been terrorizing the jungle waters under his protection. Using cunning and relentless justice, he turns their own crimes against them, forcing the pirates to rebuild the villages they destroyed before turning them over to the Jungle Patrol.
In "The Tournament," the real Phantom returns to the jungle to find a masked impostor— an escaped convict who’s stolen his uniform and accidentally entered the annual Wambezi wrestling tournament. Misunderstanding the rules and language, the con stumbles through the competition, only to see the local champion crowned as ruler of the jungle, a result that shocks the elders. When the Phantom finally steps in to restore order, he faces the champion in a clash that settles the fate of the jungle—leaving the crook still clueless about what just happened.
