While heading to a conference via shuttlecraft, Ed and Gordon answer a distress call from a Union ship that was lost a century before. Upon investigating, their shuttlecraft is fired upon and they crash land on the nearest planet, where they encounter a primitive bird-like race. Meanwhile Bortus asks Kelly to intervene when Topa is not allowed to attend school on the Orville.
