“The Summoning, Chapter Five: City on the Edge of Hell!”

To save mankind they became the Night Force" — that tagline sets a suitably grim tone for this December 1982 DC chiller. Gene Colan and Bob Smith's cover is a brooding collage of dread: a cloaked, bruised figure dominates the foreground while a distressed woman lies fallen below him, an enormous skull looms against a lurid purple sky, and armed pursuers trek through a snowbound mountain pass in the distance. It's a striking, atmospheric composition that captures the series' blend of supernatural menace and human peril beautifully.
