The New Sun #[nn]
"The Sunny House" is a poignant, autobiographical story by Taro Yashima, who both wrote and illustrated this intimate memoir in graphic form. Set in a rural corner of Japan where the spirit of reform took root, it traces Yashima’s family history through generations of quiet resilience and shared humanity, from a humble samurai’s home to his father’s inclusive medical practice. With delicate, expressive art and a quiet voice, the story captures childhood memories, the pull of distant dreams, and the enduring beauty of a place that shaped a life.

Rather than the expected confession of crimes, Taro Yashima writes a true personal history. In the part of Japan where the movement to break feudalism began, a poor Samurai makes a home. Years later his son opens a medical practice, treating all he encounters, rich or poor, because all men are brothers. He tells his son, Taro Yashima, tales of the French Revolution and the Meiji Revolution. The land is beautiful, the children of the farms are Taro Yashima's friends. But at last he leaves his village for high school in a nearby city; he loves to paint, but also dreams of being an admiral.
