“The Ville”

Marvel's long-running Vietnam War series continues with issue #61, titled "Scapegoat!" on the cover — a raw, unsettling image rendered by Kevin Kobasic and Klaus Janson of a battered, bound man collapsed on the ground, ropes cutting into his body and splints tied to his limbs against a stark red, yellow, and blue background. The POW★MIA emblem in the corner gives the image an added weight, grounding this fictional story in a very real and painful chapter of American history. With Chuck Dixon writing and Wayne Vansant on interior art, this 1991 series remains one of comics' most grounded explorations of the Vietnam War experience.

writer Chuck Dixon · artist Wayne Vansant · inker Nicholas James · colorist, letterer Phil Felix · cover Kevin Kobasic, Klaus Janson
