“Old Gangsters Never Die”

"Old Gangsters Never Die" is a stark, noir-tinged tale from Jack Cole’s pen and pencil, a gripping character study wrapped in the shadows of 1940s crime fiction. Through the Johnsons’ quiet listening, we hear Mary Kennedy’s harrowing account of escape, manipulation, and the weight of a name she tried to leave behind. The story unfolds with quiet intensity, anchored in a world where loyalty is a trap and redemption is a fragile hope—rendered with the unmistakable, hard-edged style of Jack Cole.

The Johnsons hear the story of Mary Kennedy, a roomer of theirs, who left Kansas City and changed her name to escape the clutches of a drug dealer named Tony, who she was a moll for. He got her plenty of dates...dates that were actually pushing dope on the side and when she wanted to get out of this racket, Tony reminded her that she was his front for the racket and was just as guilty as he was. Mary later learns from Jacobs, narcotics agent, that he had joined the gang to get the goods on the Big Boss, which he now had. The Johnsons, after hearing the story, encouraged Mary to tell her story.
