The Lone Rider encounters a Native American named Swift Arrow and learns about the legendary "Silver Bugle"—a victory medicine for Swift Arrow's people that has long puzzled the Lone Rider. When strangers are found dead and unarmed near the Lone Rider, he is wrongly suspected of murder, but Swift Arrow vouches for his innocence and they resolve to find the truth about the matter. The pair discover that an old hermit has filed a land claim and a gold rush ensues, with various prospectors rushing to stake claims on the hermit's land.
