“A Change of Heart”

In "A Change of Heart," Young Hawk and Little Buck return to a Chickasaw village after saving a hunter from a rattlesnake, only to find themselves at odds with the shaman and his son Black Dog. Forced to flee with Black Dog as a hostage, the boys' journey takes a dangerous turn when Black Dog manipulates an elder named High Cloud into setting him free—then steals his rescuer's canoe. Written by Gaylord Du Bois and illustrated by Jon Small, with a cover by Ernest Nordli, this 1951 Dell adventure blends tension and shifting loyalties in a story where trust is as fragile as the riverbank.
