“Gay Nineties Gamble”

From 1948, this Marvel ten-center puts the flaming android hero front and center as he blazes into what appears to be a stone-walled dungeon, announcing his arrival with a defiant "Here I am!" A glamorous, coolly menacing woman in a white gown — identified on the cover as "The Strangler" — issues a one-minute ultimatum, while a young sidekick in chains refuses to give Torch up. Cover pencils by Syd Shores and inks by Vince Alascia give the scene a sharp, pulpy tension that pairs nicely with Bill Woolfolk's story title, "Gay Nineties Gamble.

A criminal called the Hyena is causing truck crashes, the latest of which resulted in the driver being killed. Although Lennox, the manager, advises Lorraine Miller, the company owner, to sell out, she's determined not to, and accepts help from The Torch and Toro. Following another crash, they capture two of the hijackers, and Lorraine figures someone inside the company tipped them to the truck's secret route. The Torch and Toro barely manage to save her life and capture the villains.
