About this Collection

The Graveyard Club: Fresh Blood #1 (April 2025) is the second chapter of R.L. Stine's first original YA horror graphic-novel series for BOOM! Studios, completing what the publisher would later collect as a single omnibus hardcover — a rare case of a prose horror giant building an entirely new mythology in sequential-art form aimed squarely at the teenage reader gap between middle-grade scares and adult horror comics. The series represents Stine's most sustained attempt to work across all three age tiers at a single publisher — middle-grade (Just Beyond), adult (Stuff of Nightmares), and now YA — each with a distinct creative collaborator, making it a meaningful moment in the ongoing critical conversation about horror comics as legitimate YA literature. Fresh Blood escalates the supernatural stakes of the first volume by centering on the mysterious disappearances of Parker and Rhonda's fathers, pushing the Graveyard Club from reactive teen mischief into active, dangerous investigation of their town's darker secrets. Collected alongside Revenge Game in a single August 2025 omnibus, the two-volume story stands as Stine's most complete creator-driven comic work in the YA space to date.

History

BOOM! Studios VP of Editorial Bryce Carlson shepherded Stine through three distinct comics registers at the publisher — middle-grade horror with Just Beyond (2019), adult horror with Stuff of Nightmares (2022), and finally YA horror with The Graveyard Club — making the series a deliberate capstone to that creative partnership. Carlson specifically framed the project as filling the YA gap Stine had not yet tackled in comics. Italian artist Carola Borelli, a Rome-based illustrator who had previously assisted at IDW and worked with Image, Archie, and Marvel, was paired with Stine as the series' visual architect, with colorist Francesco Segala (House of Slaughter) and letterer Jim Campbell (I Heart Skull-Crusher!) rounding out the production team. Fresh Blood was solicited in the February 2025 Previews catalog under Diamond code DEC240063 and shipped April 16, 2025 to comic shops (a day after the bookstore edition on April 15), continuing BOOM!'s dual-channel distribution strategy for the series.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • The Graveyard Club: Fresh Blood #1 (BOOM! Studios) shipped to comic shops April 16, 2025 and to bookstores April 15, 2025 — the second oversized one-shot in the series.
  • Written by R.L. Stine, illustrated by Carola Borelli, colored by Francesco Segala with assistance from Gloria Martinelli, and lettered by Jim Campbell.
  • Main cover by Miguel Mercado; variant covers include editions by Dan Mora, Tula Lotay, and Zu Orzu, as well as a BOOM! 20th Anniversary variant.
  • Core cast introduced in the first volume and carried into Fresh Blood: Parker West, Patti Olsen, Caleb, Trip, and Rhonda — five social-outcast high schoolers from the cemetery-ringed town of Graves End.
  • Fresh Blood's central mystery involves the disappearances of Parker and Rhonda's fathers, escalating the series from teen revenge schemes to active supernatural investigation.
  • The series is the third distinct horror-comics tier Stine has worked in at BOOM! Studios, following middle-grade Just Beyond (2019–2021) and adult-aimed Stuff of Nightmares (2022–2023).
  • Both volumes — The Graveyard Club: Revenge Game and The Graveyard Club: Fresh Blood — were collected together in a single hardcover and softcover omnibus solicited for August 2025.
  • BOOM! Studios' promotional copy positioned the series as 'The Breakfast Club in a graveyard,' drawing a deliberate coming-of-age ensemble comparison alongside horror-comics comparisons to Locke & Key and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.
