Only Eric Powell's series could pair a drooling, red-eyed monster looming out of the darkness with a stoic little old lady clutching a "Lady Tailors Union Local 25 — Strike" banner and a picket sash, and make it feel completely natural. The contrast between the towering, clawed beast and the utterly unimpressed picketer is both absurd and genuinely charming, capturing everything that makes The Goon such a singular comic. Powell's linework brings both figures to life with real atmosphere, and Dave Stewart's colors keep the shadowy menace dialed up while spotlighting that determined little union member front and center.
