“Peaches Valentine in All Hail the Oprah”

Eric Powell's The Goon #19 delivers one of the series' most wonderfully strange cover images: the big-fisted Goon wading through churning water, a tentacle coiled around his raised arm, while an enormous brain-like creature covered in dozens of staring eyeballs looms overhead — with a couple of shambling, slack-jawed undead figures caught up in the chaos beside him. Powell's painted cover has a moody, murky atmosphere that blends pulp horror with dark comedy in exactly the way fans of this series have come to love. Published by Dark Horse in 2007, this is the kind of gloriously weird package that makes The Goon such a distinctive corner of the comics world.
