About this Collection

The Complete Hate #3 (May 2026) closes out Fantagraphics' definitive paperback repackaging of what is widely regarded as the essential chronicle of Generation X alternative culture — a work that, in its original run, helped define the aesthetics and attitudes of grunge-era youth just as that movement was crystallizing in the mainstream. By assembling all nine issues of the Hate Annual (2001–2011) alongside supplemental strips from Details magazine, I Like Comics, and other outlets, Volume 3 makes the full arc of Buddy Bradley's life — from unmoored Seattle slacker to reluctant New Jersey husband and father — accessible in a single affordable paperback for the first time. Completing the paperback trilogy also puts Bagge's work in direct conversation with the broader alternative-comics tradition championed by peers like the Hernandez Brothers and Daniel Clowes, cementing Hate's place as one of the medium's most sustained, character-driven projects of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries.

History

Hate launched in 1990 from Fantagraphics as a spin-off of the Buddy Bradley strips Bagge had developed in his earlier anthology series Neat Stuff, and ran for thirty issues through 1998 before Bagge revived it as the annual Hate Annual format beginning in 2000, which continued through nine issues ending in 2011. The Complete Hate paperback series — with Volume 1 arriving in mid-2025, Volume 2 in December 2025, and Volume 3 on May 12, 2026 — was designed to make the complete body of work, including rare ephemera and illustrations created for merchandise, toys, and magazines, available in a modern collected edition with new covers, endpapers, and title pages by Bagge prepared specifically for each volume. The paperback trilogy follows an earlier hardcover box set released in 2020, representing the second time Fantagraphics has undertaken a complete archival collection of the series.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Published by Fantagraphics; on sale May 12, 2026; approximately 256 pages; rated Mature; written and drawn by Peter Bagge.
  • Collects all nine issues of Hate Annual (2001–2011) — the post-revival continuation of the original 1990–1998, 30-issue Hate series — plus supplemental strips from Details magazine, I Like Comics, and other publications.
  • Concludes Buddy Bradley's narrative arc: in this volume Buddy is in his 30s, married to Lisa Leavenworth, a new father, has shaved his head, adopted an eye-patch, quit his day job, and purchased a local garbage dump.
  • Buddy Bradley originated in Bagge's earlier strip 'The Bradleys' in Neat Stuff, making the Complete Hate series the definitive collection of the character's entire publication history across multiple formats.
  • The original Hate series was notable for a major mid-run format shift: with issue #16, the comic switched from black-and-white to full color as Buddy relocated from Seattle to New Jersey, and Bagge began using an inker — Jim Blanchard — which was unusual for an alt-comics title of the era.
  • Hate received European distribution in the mid-1990s in Spanish (as Odio, published by Ediciones La Cúpula), Italian, and German editions; the Spanish translation was particularly popular, and Bagge separately sanctioned new Buddy stories by German artists for that market.
  • A four-minute animated pilot based on the comic was produced in 1995, co-written by Bagge and Steve Loter, directed by Loter, animated by Rough Draft Studios, and featuring music by Mudhoney; the series was in development at MTV, HBO, and Fox at various points but never went to series.
  • Each volume in the Complete Hate paperback series features new covers, endpapers, and title pages created specifically by Bagge for the collection, making the paperbacks distinct from the 2020 hardcover box set editions.
