The Collected Toppi #2

The second volume of Lion Forge's Collected Toppi series turns its gaze to North America, and Sergio Toppi's cover art makes an immediate impression — a richly detailed Indigenous elder in full ceremonial regalia dominates the composition, his weathered face and feathered headdress rendered with extraordinary painterly depth, while a smaller figure of an armed frontiersman stands at the lower right, rifle in hand and wide-brimmed hat on his head. Together these two figures quietly embody the collision of worlds that defined the continent's history. With writing by Toppi and Jeremy Melloul alongside Toppi's own masterful linework inside, this 2019 collection is a beautiful showcase of one of comics' most distinctive visual voices.
