About this Collection

A graphic novel originally serialized in 2002, this standalone story follows a lone survivor stranded on a remote island after a shipwreck. The narrative explores themes of isolation and survival as the protagonist contends with the harsh environment and his own psyche. Published by HarperCollins, this edition collects the complete tale from the creator's original run.

In this 2002 story by James Stevenson, timid Hubie finds himself stranded on a desert island after falling from his family’s airship during a storm—only to be befriended by Leo, a seasoned castaway who shows him how to survive the wild. Through shared adventures and unexpected rescues, Hubie discovers a courage he didn’t know he had, all before the pair are swept back to the very resort they’d fled. Written and illustrated by James Stevenson, this heartfelt journey blends quiet introspection with playful survival antics, ending with a surprising shift in perspective from the once-shy boy.

Timid Hubie is worried about the airship journey his family is taking to a tropical island resort. He falls from the airship during a storm, and meets Leo, a long-term castaway on a desert island. Leo teaches him the ways of a castaway's life -- swinging on vines, shooting rapids, etc. As they fall off a waterfall they unexpectedly land on the airship and quickly find themselves at the resort. The father suggests someplace quiet for next year's vacation, but once-timid Hubie thinks they should climb Mount Everest.
