“Over The Hills With The Swords of A Thousand Men Part Five”

Darick Robertson's cover for issue #64 of Garth Ennis's mature-readers series delivers a genuinely unsettling image: a caped, red-masked superhuman hovers triumphantly above the Iwo Jima Memorial while several other costumed figures — including a winged, bat-like female flyer and a dark-clad figure to the right — circle in a stormy sky, all set against a foreground littered with what appears to be bloody carnage. The juxtaposition of that solemn monument, inscribed with "Uncommon Valor Was a Common Virtue," against this gathering of morally compromised supers captures everything that makes The Boys such a sharp, sardonic series. Part five of "Over The Hills With The Swords of A Thousand Men" promises the arc is heading somewhere appropriately dark and provocative.
