“Over The Hills With The Swords of A Thousand Men Part Three”

Darick Robertson's cover for issue #62 of Garth Ennis and Russ Braun's mature-readers series takes a clever meta turn, presenting a fictional in-universe comic book — Queen Maeve: Empress of the Otherworld #1 — as if it's lying on the ground, its cover featuring the armored, sword-wielding Maeve in full '90s fantasy warrior glory, complete with a promotional blurb promising readers to "say hello to Her Majesty in her first issue of the Nineties!" It's a pointed, satirical nod to a very specific era of superhero comics excess, and the joke lands with genuine wit. Part three of "Over The Hills With The Swords of A Thousand Men" continues what has been one of the sharpest-edged superhero deconstructions of its time.
