“Barbary Coast Part One”

Garth Ennis's mature-readers saga reaches issue fifty-two with a cover by Darick Robertson that evokes a wartime tableau straight out of a snowbound European forest — a towering, star-helmeted figure clutching a golden eagle shield strides forward, flanked by a winged hero, a red-suited woman, a small caped figure, and a handful of costumed teammates, all backed by ranks of World War II-era soldiers fanning out through the bare winter trees. The composition has the weight of a platoon photograph, superhuman muscle pressed uncomfortably close to ordinary soldiers in a snowy landscape that feels both grand and quietly ominous. Kicking off the "Barbary Coast" arc, this issue is a compelling entry point into one of Dynamite's most provocative ongoing series.
