Peter Wheat rides out to the wheat field on his blue jay companion to check on the harvest and ensure the wicked Hornet knights do not harm the crop. When a baby mouse expresses a desire to help defend the wheat field like the beetle soldiers, Peter encourages the mouse to stay nearby for safety. The mouse is subsequently captured by a wizard and his hornet army, forcing Peter and the beetle to mount a rescue using a long stick to catch them as they are swept downstream by a current. Peter and the beetle then enlist the help of a blue jay to reach the wizard's cave hideaway in the mountains, where they organize a counterattack against the hornet forces to rescue the mouse.
