The 100 Greatest Marvels of All Time #10
"Spider-Man!" — a standout entry in *The 100 Greatest Marvels of All Time* #10 (2001) — reimagines a timeless tale of faith and mystery, rooted in a small Mediterranean island where tradition and the supernatural blur. Written by Stan Lee and illustrated with haunting precision by Steve Ditko, the story follows Old Pedros, the island’s bell-ringer, as he defies the erupting volcano to keep the church bells ringing, trusting that someone, somewhere, will hear. The cover by Steve Ditko captures the moment of wonder, as sunlight lifts the old man into the sky—leaving the villagers, and readers, to wonder: was it miracle, or magic?

On a small Mediterranean island of fisherfolk, Old Pedros is the town bell-ringer. One day the volcano atop the island begins to erupt. The villagers evacuate and put out to sea. Old Pedros, though, stays at the church. "The bells must be rung," he tells himself. "Someone will hear. For centuries someone has always heard!" Molten rock streams toward the church. Before it reaches Old Pedros, a ray of sunlight surrounds him. The superstitious villagers swear they saw him ride that ray into the sky. Did their eyes play tricks on them, or did Someone hear the bells?
