The second issue of Chris Condon and Jacob Phillips's noir-drenched series sets an unsettling tone right from its cover: a bespectacled man in an orange shirt stands tense and wary before a "Welcome to Ambrose County" sign streaked with blood, while two large, pale hands reach in from the darkness to seize him. Jacob Phillips's moody, shadow-heavy artwork makes the sprawling Texas setting feel genuinely threatening, with that blood-smeared welcome sign doing a lot of quiet, chilling work. If the first chapter drew you in, this one — subtitled "A Brothers Conscience" — looks poised to deepen the dread considerably.
