Chris Condon and Jacob Phillips's gritty neo-noir series continues with issue seventeen, and Jacob Phillips's stark black-and-white cover sets an immediate tone of dread — a weathered figure grips a handgun in near darkness, the looming silhouette of Texas mapped overhead like a shadow over the whole proceedings. The title alone, "What Happened to Sam and the Home Invasion," promises the kind of tense, rural menace this series does so well. Published by Image in 2022 as part of the publisher's 30th anniversary, this is atmospheric crime comics at its most unsettling.
