Christine Daaé has a benefactor living under the Paris Opera House. Christine recounts being abducted by the Phantom to Raoul, a childhood friend and suitor. After removing the Phantom's mask, he tells Christine the deformation resulted from an acid splash when he confronted an associate who intended to take credit for his opera. Raoul devises a scheme to capture the phantom, but the Phantom kidnaps Christine. The Phantom captures Raoul during the rescue attempt, but releases him and Christine when he realizes she will never truly love him. Newspapers report that Erik dies after the incident.
