“I Was a Fugitive from a Dog Patrol!”

The second chapter of this four-issue Vertigo series from 1998 pairs Alan Grant and Keith Giffen's writing with Mick McMahon's wonderfully rubbery artwork, and the cover delivers an immediate sense of anarchic fun. A square-jawed, uniformed man with a silvery pompadour is locked in a wild mid-air tussle with a snarling, fanged orange beast, the pair tangled together against a backdrop of glowing green ooze filled with eerie faces. McMahon's loose, kinetic linework gives the whole scene a gleefully off-kilter energy that perfectly matches the issue's chapter title, "I Was a Fugitive from a Dog Patrol!
