Tarzan of the Apes #2
In "Tarzan and the Boers / Tarzan and the Chinese," Tarzan lends his strength to the Boer settlers as they build a new life in the jungle, unaware that Chief Ishtak’s spies are watching from the shadows. As tensions simmer between the settlers and the hidden tribe, Annitje’s bold advances toward Tarzan are met with quiet refusal—turning her into a foe who aligns with the hostile storekeeper Henrik Smit, whose true intentions remain cloaked in deceit. Written by Don Garden and brought to life with dynamic art by Burne Hogarth—pencils, inks, and lettering all by the same hand—this 1954 adventure blends frontier grit with jungle intrigue, set against the backdrop of a world where trust is as fragile as the jungle canopy. Cover by Burne Hogarth.

Tarzan assists the Boer settlers in constructing their jungle settlement. Nearby in the brush the spies of Chief Ishtak watch, hidden, and later report to their chief of the settlers' progress. But Ishtak and his men wait on guns, with which they plan to use in order to take the settlement once it's done. Meanwhile one of the Boer women, Annitje, is boldly flirtatious with Tarzan, but he rebuffs her. In doing so she becomes his enemy, and sides with storekeeper Henrik Smit, who expresses a fierce hostility toward Tarzan. Smit secretly plans on providing guns to Chief Ishtak and his men.
