In "Svart magi," Tarzan and the Makuda people offer aid to two white prospectors, Weiss and O'Leary, who soon grow suspicious of the tribe’s golden ornaments. Tempted by greed, the pair lure other gold seekers to Makuda land to distract the villagers while they steal from the hidden gold mine. Tarzan sees their deception, but when O'Leary fires at him, the mine collapses—burying the thieves in a torrent of gold. The Makuda chief vows never to seek gold again, knowing it brings only ruin. Weiss och O'Leary, två vita lycksökare, får hjälp, vatten och mat av Tarzan och Makuda-folket. Snart märker Weiss och O'Leary att Makuda-folket bär stora guldsmycken och beslutar sig för att hitta deras guldgruva. De beger sig sedan till en närbelägen stad där de lurar iväg alla andra guldletare till Makudas land för att distrahera stammen medan de stjäl guld från gruvan. Tarzan ser genom listen, men när O'Leary skjuter mot Tarzan rasar gruvan in och begraver dem i ett regn av guld. Makuda-hövdingen svär att sluta leta guld; det för bara elände med sig.
