“A Walk on the Wild Side”

Opening the four-issue Apocalypse! miniseries from DC Vertigo, this November 1995 issue kicks things off with a wonderfully irreverent Brian Bolland cover: Tank Girl stands front and center — visibly pregnant, cigar in hand, rocket launcher slung over one shoulder and a pistol at her hip — while a muscular, anthropomorphic kangaroo beside her exclaims "My boy!" The graffiti-scrawled "Booga wos hear" across her belly adds a perfectly cheeky touch to Bolland's sharply rendered, darkly dramatic composition. With Alan Grant writing and Andy Pritchett on interior art, this is a boldly offbeat corner of the Vertigo lineup that wastes no time announcing its anarchic sense of humor.
