About this Issue

Tales of Suspense #47 (cover-dated November 1963) marks the debut of the Melter — Bruno Horgan — who joins the still-growing Iron Man rogues gallery less than a year after Tony Stark's own first appearance. Beyond that first appearance, the issue holds a specific place in Iron Man's evolutionary arc: it is the first time in the character's history that Tony Stark deliberately engineers a purpose-built variant suit of armor to neutralize a specific villain's power, seeding a core premise — Stark's willingness to outthink and out-engineer any threat — that has defined the character ever since. The issue also sits one chapter before the debut of Iron Man's iconic red-and-gold armor in #48, making it effectively the last stand of the original golden suit. Finally, Horgan went on to co-found Baron Zemo's original Masters of Evil in Avengers #6, meaning this issue is the narrative origin of one of that team's founding members.

In "Iron Man Battles the Melter!", Tony Stark faces a dangerous new foe when a disgruntled former rival turns to crime as the Melter, sabotaging one of Stark's facilities. With the plant under threat and his armor no match for the Melter's heat-based attacks, Iron Man must think fast—using his genius to craft a new aluminum suit that defies the villain's power. Written by Stan Lee and illustrated with sharp precision by Steve Ditko, with inks by Don Heck and letters by Sam Rosen, this 1963 classic features a dynamic cover by Jack Kirby and George Roussos.

History

The story was written by Stan Lee and drawn with pencils by Steve Ditko — one of only three consecutive Iron Man installments Ditko handled (#47–49) — with inking by Don Heck, who had been the series' primary visual voice and whose heavy finishing work over Ditko's pencils prompted the issue's unusual internal credits of 'Interpreted by' (Ditko) and 'Refined by' (Heck). The cover was provided by Jack Kirby with inking by Sol Brodsky, a common split-responsibility arrangement for the anthology title at the time. Letterer Sam Rosen rounded out the production crew. The GCD notes that the inks credit was a matter of correction — the original index had listed Dick Ayers, later corrected to Don Heck via Nick Caputo's research. The issue went on sale August 8, 1963, with a November 1963 cover date, priced at 12 cents.
