Swamp Thing #4
Enrique Breccia's cover for this August 2004 Vertigo issue is genuinely unsettling — a roaring, massive Swamp Thing clutches a small human figure in one raised fist while three inset panels below tease a grotesque gallery of creatures, from a pale disembodied hand to a hunched beast and a bug-eyed winged horror. It's a striking visual promise for "Bad Seed, Part Four," the conclusion of Andy Diggle's opening arc on the title. With Enrique and Martín Breccia bringing a painted, visceral texture to every page, this run has a distinctly mature, European horror sensibility that sets it apart from the swamp's many previous incarnations.
