“The Best Medicine”

With only one issue left in this MAX Comics limited series, Steve Dillon's cover for issue five sets a deeply unsettling tone: Nighthawk sits chained to a chair, his glowing orange eyes staring out from behind his dark mask, completely restrained and surrounded by a trio of leering clowns closing in from all sides. It's a genuinely striking image — the contrast between the armored, brooding vigilante and the grotesque carnival figures gives the whole thing a nightmarish quality that feels right at home in Marvel's mature-readers line. Daniel Way and Steve Dillon's collaboration has clearly saved some of its most provocative imagery for the penultimate chapter.
