Superman's Girl Friend, Lois Lane #84

The cover of issue #84 says it all: Lois Lane, dressed in a prison uniform and clutching the bars of a cell with prisoner number 38397 on her chest, desperately pleads with Superman to identify her — while Superman himself turns to a police officer and solemnly declares her a "dangerous criminal" who must be imprisoned for life. Neal Adams brings a striking tension to the scene, with Lois's wide-eyed alarm playing sharply against Superman's cold, composed expression. It's a wonderfully unsettling setup for the interior story "Lois Lane, Convict!," with writing by Robert Bernstein and art by Kurt Schaffenberger.
