Superman en Batman #3/1967

Mar 1967 · Vanderhout · 0,60 NLG; 10 BEF
“De fatale voorspellingen van Dr. Zodiac”
About this Issue

Superman en Batman #3/1967 is a concrete artifact of how Silver Age DC Comics reached Dutch-speaking audiences during one of the most creatively fertile periods in the characters' histories — the mid-1960s Gardner Fox and Carmine Infantino run that modernized Batman with a detective-driven 'New Look' and produced stories still reprinted today. As one of only twelve numbered issues Vanderhout published in the reset 1967 run, it brings that same Fox-Infantino collaboration to the Netherlands in translated form, placing the Dr. Zodiac villain story squarely in the context of a broader European reprint ecosystem that paralleled French, Belgian, and German DC licensing operations of the era. For Dutch collectors the series represents the primary gateway through which a generation first encountered Superman and Batman as costumed crime-fighters rather than novelty figures, shaping the Benelux comics readership before later publishers (Interpresse, Williams, Baldakijn) took over the licenses.

History

Vanderhout & Co. N.V. was a Utrecht-based publisher active in the Dutch comics market in the 1960s, licensing DC Comics material for the Benelux region. The series began as Superman - De man van staal around 1965 and was retitled Superman en Batman from approximately 1966 onward; in both 1967 and 1968 the issue numbering reset to #1 each January before switching to continuous numbering from 1969 onward. The covers across the series were not simple reproductions: Vanderhout routinely had its covers redrawn or compositionally extended from interior story panels, retaining dramatic moments but adapting the layout for standalone cover presentation. When the Dutch run ended, the Belgian publisher Interpresse continued the series for roughly twenty additional issues through 1971.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Title of this issue: 'Dr. Zodiac' — identified on the cover/indicia of the Dutch edition.
  • Script credited to Gardner Fox, the prolific Silver Age DC writer who co-created the Justice League, Zatanna, and (with Infantino) Barbara Gordon/Batgirl.
  • Art credited to Carmine Infantino, the Silver Age Batman and Flash artist who also served as DC's art director starting in late 1966/early 1967 — making this issue's source material contemporary with his peak influence at DC.
  • Published by Vanderhout & Co. N.V., Utrecht — the Dutch licensee that issued DC superhero comics in the Netherlands from approximately 1965 to 1970.
  • The 1967 series used a reset annual numbering system (issues #1–12 for 1967, then reset again for 1968), meaning this issue is the third of twelve in the 1967 calendar-year run.
  • Covers throughout the Vanderhout Superman en Batman series were frequently adapted or redrawn from interior story panels rather than reproduced directly from U.S. editions.
  • The catalog character 'Louise Laan' likely represents a Dutch-localized rendering of Lois Lane, consistent with the translation practices of Dutch-language DC editions of this era.
  • After the Vanderhout run concluded, the Belgian publisher Interpresse continued the Superman en Batman series for approximately twenty additional issues (circa 1970–1971), indicating sustained Benelux demand for the material.
