The underlying US issue was scripted by Bill Finger — best known as Batman's co-creator — with pencils by Wayne Boring and inks by Stan Kaye, under the editorship of Whitney Ellsworth at DC (then operating as National Comics). The Canadian printing was made possible when a 1947 foreign-exchange crisis prompted the Canadian government to ban US comic imports but permitted publishers to import American printing mats; National Comics Publications Ltd. used those mats to produce a condensed 36-page edition at the same ten-cent cover price as the US book. The standard US edition ran 52 pages and included additional stories by Alvin Schwartz, Al Plastino, and Henry Boltinoff that were trimmed from the Canadian printing.
