Superman #1/1965
Superman #1/1965 (Vanderhout) holds a firm place in Dutch comics history as the very first Superman publication ever released in the Dutch language, opening the Man of Steel's Silver Age adventures to an entirely new European readership. As the debut issue of a monthly anthology, it established the template for how DC's superhero properties would be adapted for the Dutch-speaking market — a template that outlasted Vanderhout itself and influenced subsequent licensees for decades. The issue reprints stories from Superman Annual #8, which itself contains a notable piece of Legion of Super-Heroes history: a story marking the second appearance of the Legion. By bringing these Silver Age American superhero narratives — identity crises, Kryptonian origin mythology, and Superboy's adventures — to Dutch readers in accessible translation, this issue helped plant the seeds of a sustained superhero comics culture in the Netherlands.

Uitgeverij Vanderhout & Co. NV was a Utrecht-based publisher that secured the DC Comics license in 1965, launching the first Dutch-language superhero periodical. The debut issue reprints content drawn from Superman Annual #8 (DC, 1960 series), a Silver Age giant that collected multiple stories touching on Clark Kent's secret identity, Superboy's youth in Smallville, and Lois Lane's recurring rocket misadventures. Vanderhout localized the character names for Dutch readers — most notably rendering 'Lois Lane' as 'Louise Laan' — a domestication practice that persisted into the later Classics publishing era. The series ran monthly under the title Superman – De man van staal before being retitled Superman en Batman from 1966 onward, reflecting the expansion of its content to include Batman stories.
