About this Collection

This hardcover album marks the debut of the DC New 52 Superman in the Dutch-language market, bringing George Pérez's reinvention of the Man of Steel to Benelux readers for the first time under the RW Uitgeverij imprint. The source material itself was a culturally significant moment in Superman publishing history: the New 52 relaunch of September 2011 wiped the slate clean on decades of continuity, positioning Superman as a figure Metropolis both fears and mistrusts rather than the unambiguous civic idol of prior eras. Pérez's run used that new freedom to wrestle seriously with questions of public accountability and media scrutiny for a superpowered alien living in a surveillance-saturated city — a thematic shift that coloured the entire New 52 Superman line that followed. As the opening volume of RW Uitgeverij's Superman — New 52 album series, it also represents the publisher's commitment to releasing only collected, complete-story editions rather than periodic single issues, a format philosophy that distinguished it from every previous Dutch DC publisher.

History

The underlying material was created as part of DC's sweeping September 2011 New 52 relaunch, with George Pérez writing and contributing art alongside pencillers Jesús Merino and Nicola Scott. RW Uitgeverij — the Dutch arm of Italian publisher RW Edizioni — had acquired the rights to publish Dutch-language DC Comics from January 2013 onward, and released this hardcover collection of Superman #1–6 on 21 August 2014 under the title De prijs van verandering ('The Price of Tomorrow'). The publisher's house style of producing only omnibus-format hardcovers, rather than newsstand periodicals, gave Dutch readers a curated album experience rather than the monthly pamphlet format familiar to American collectors.
