History

The series was conceived as a direct launch title within Marvel's Avengers NOW! initiative, spinning out of Rick Remender's Avengers & X-Men: AXIS crossover event, which provided the story engine — the moral inversion spell — that justified a sustained Tony Stark villain-protagonist series. Senior Editor Mark Paniccia described the inverted Tony as a character 'we haven't seen since before that fateful heart injury,' framing the run as an excavation of the pre-heroic Stark rather than a simple evil-twin story. The series represented the Marvel debut for both writer Tom Taylor, previously known for DC's Injustice: Gods Among Us and Earth 2, and Turkish artist Yıldıray Çınar, who had most recently drawn DC's Supergirl; Çınar confirmed in a CBR interview that the silver color scheme for the new armor originated with Marvel's editorial team, who wanted a look that reflected Stark's new attitude. The issue was released on November 12, 2014 with a January 2015 cover date, and received a second printing, indicating strong initial demand.
