After being rejected by Scotland Yard, O'Brien infiltrates the counterfeiters' operation and uses acid to destroy their engraving plates, enabling his escape through a skylight. The story concludes with O'Brien encountering a man named Cartwright who proposes a horse-racing competition, with a character named Barber Gebbie backing O'Brien against Cartwright's butler in the wager.
