From writer Mike Carey and artist Elena Casagrande, this 2013 Boom! Studios series opens with a striking cover by Tommy Lee Edwards: a police officer, rifle slung over his shoulder, stands behind crime-scene tape surveying a city block engulfed in flames — while a handful of costumed, seemingly superhuman figures stride through the inferno behind him. It's a quietly tense image that immediately establishes a world where law enforcement and powered individuals occupy the same burning streets, and the officer's guarded glance back over his shoulder says everything about the odds he's facing.
