About this Issue

Star Wars: A New Legacy #1 stands as Marvel's official tenth-anniversary salute to its 2015 reunion with the Star Wars license, gathering the three writers most responsible for building the Marvel-original corner of the galaxy — Charles Soule, Jason Aaron, and Kieron Gillen — for one collaborative anthology one-shot. The issue is a narrative capstone on a decade of comics-born characters who, unlike any before them, managed to become fixtures of the Star Wars canon entirely outside of a film or television screen; Doctor Aphra in particular, as the first original character not from the films to headline a canon Star Wars comic series, is the face of that achievement. By collecting these characters into a single celebration before Marvel's 2025 line-wide post-Return of the Jedi relaunch, the issue also functions as a formal handoff — a closing bracket on one era and a threshold into the next.

History

The one-shot was conceived and announced in October 2024 under editor Mark Paniccia — himself a key steward of the entire Marvel Star Wars era — as a deliberate commemoration of the decade that began with Jason Aaron and John Cassaday's Star Wars #1 in January 2015. Paniccia assembled the three writers who had done the most to populate that decade's canon with new characters, and the project marked Kieron Gillen's first return to Star Wars storytelling in roughly five years. The final-order cutoff was set for December 9, 2024, with the issue shipping January 29, 2025, giving it a cover date of March 2025.

Trivia · 7 facts

  • Three anthology stories: 'The Grand Imperial Jubilee' (Charles Soule / Ramon Rosanas), 'For the Love of the Empire' (Jason Aaron / Leonard Kirk), and 'Rogue's Gambit' (Kieron Gillen / Salva Espín).
  • Story 1 is set in 2 BBY — during a Third Decennial Imperial Jubilee on Alderaan — making it, according to reviewer analysis, likely the chronologically earliest published Doctor Aphra story.
  • In Story 1, Doctor Aphra and Sana Starros execute a heist at the Imperial gala while Beilert Valance and Rik Duel wait outside to collect Aphra's bounty; Darth Momin's mask possesses a stormtrooper and goes on a murderous rampage before being stopped by Commander Zahra.
  • Story 3, 'Rogue's Gambit,' is set within Gillen's original 2015 Darth Vader run (prior to the Vader Down crossover) and stars 0-0-0 and BT-1 in a darkly comedic dejarik game against Black Krrsantan — a deliberate inversion of the Chewbacca/R2-D2 holochess scene from A New Hope.
  • The issue served as a direct lead-in to Marvel's 2025 Star Wars line relaunch, which shifted the entire comics line into a post-Return of the Jedi setting.
  • Variant covers were produced by Steve McNiven (main), Leinil Francis Yu (1:25 incentive variant), and Kyle Hotz (standard variant and 1:50 virgin variant).
  • Doctor Aphra — created by Kieron Gillen, Salvador Larroca, and editors Jordan D. White and Heather Antos — is the only character to appear in two of the issue's three stories, and is historically notable as the first original Star Wars character not from the films to lead a canon comic series.
