Following an unavoidable but fatal collision with another ship, Data and Captain Louvois are arrested and put on trial in the Terviorii system, whose laws are stacked against them. Data attempts to mount one unconventional defense after another, without success, but it's Captain Louvois who finally makes the argument that frees them. Meanwhile, the Enterprise crew learns that they are to have a visit from a familiar face.
