As Kirk takes some time off, he considers his future now that he has been demoted back to Captain. But a threat from the past forces Kirk to undertake an unauthorized mission, joined by the crew of the Enterprise, including many officers who served under Kirk in the past, and they join forces with the Klingons and the Romulans to battle an alien race that threatens the galaxy.
