The popular senator-elect Acastus is ordered by the Praetor to take a final training run on the last drednaught-class ship before taking his seat in the senate. The test flight is against criminals seeking to win their freedom, lead by Acastus's former friend, Ceraph. After destroying the criminals vessel, Acastus's ship is attacked by another vessel - it appears the Praetor prefers a dead hero to a popular senator who could challenge him.
